As I approached a life transition a couple of years ago, I came to the realization that I was making it harder on myself. I thought, there’s no reason things should be this hard. I almost never took time for myself. I was exhausted.

I’ve been there too…

I really believed that being a perfectionist would improve things for the people around me, as I’ve learned through my PQ practice, it was having the opposite effect—and keeping me from creating the life I wanted. Through the Positive Intelligence program, I was able to identify the Saboteurs that were holding me back.

There are eight types of Saboteurs that we all encounter from time to time, and the ones I struggled with most were being a Stickler and Hyper Achiever. I learned through my coaching experience that these were my overused strengths built from past experiences.

And that feeling I had that life didn’t have to be so hard? It was spot-on.

  • Constantly telling yourself “I can’t…”
  • Promising yourself “I’ll be happy when…” and never feeling satisfied
  • Acing it at work while your personal relationships are in the doldrums
  • Feeling tightness in your body and exhaustion from suppressed emotions
  • More sensitive to certain social situations than others (like conflict, dealing with criticism, talking about feelings, dealing with imperfection or even enjoying downtime)

What is Positive Intelligence?

The basis of PQ is that there are two forces inside you: the Sage (your positive mental muscles) and the Saboteur (the negative). They take on many guises, and like physical fitness, the Sage is strengthened with regular mental exercises. Practicing Positive Intelligence helps you better identify when the Sage or Saboteur is activated. With regular practice, you’ll be able to more naturally operate from the Sage perspective regardless of what the world throws your way.

After 2 years of daily practice, I am now better able to discern the Saboteur and Sage mindsets at play based on the words I hear myself saying and the words others choose to use. I am able to better see the inner child and bring empathy and curiosity to my daily interactions.

Knowing that I do well with daily structure and am a creature of habit, building my practice into my day helps me be at my best, have empathy rather than judgment for myself and others and operate from the Sage Channel with a full tank. I’ve learned skills to help me refocus throughout the day.
